VSNL, MTNL in talks for Rs 500cr venture
The state-run VSNL is in talks with MTNL to form a joint venture for offering domestic long distance (DLD) telephone services in the country. The joint venture entity will pump in Rs 500 cr for the purpose. VSNL officials said the company was yet to take any decision on the proposed equity stakes of these firms and the total number of partners in the new entity.

Industrial output up 9.4% in January
Powered by a double digit growth in the crucial manufacturing sector, the industry recorded an impressive growth rate of 9.4 per cent in January 2000 as against 5.2 per cent in the same period last year.

Airlines bag nod to operate more flights

Pepsi clarifies
Pepsi Foods has denied a story published in The Financial Express yesterday suggesting that the company may pull out of the state. A company statement says: "We strongly deny ever making the statement to your correspondent or to the concerned authorities that Pepsi will pull out of Maharashtra. The issue of extremely high level of sales tax at 23 per cent on aerated waters affects all soft drink manufacturers." The Financial Express notes the Pepsi denial but would like to affirm that Pepsi officials did inform the state government that they would have to consider alternate locations for its bottling plant if the sales tax rates stayed high.
