Industrial output clocks 9.4% growth in January

Ravi Kapoor
New Delhi, March 10: Powered by the intermediate and consumer goods sectors, industrial growth registered 9.4 per cent growth in January, which compares favourably with 5.2 per cent in January 1999.

As per the quick estimates of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) released by the Central Statistical Organisation here on Friday, industrial growth stood at 7.2 per cent in April 1999-January 2000. During the corresponding period in the last fiscal, it was 3.8 per cent. The spurt of growth in January was mainly because of impressive performance in manufacturing, which has almost 80 per cent weightage in the IIP.

Manufacturing showed 11.4 per cent growth, against 5.9 per cent in January 1999. In fact, manufacturing has been on an upswing in the current fiscal, with 8 per cent growth in April 1999-January 2000, against 4.1 per cent in the corresponding period in last fiscal.

Mining, however, continued to show decline, registering -1.2 per cent growth in January against -3.3 per cent in January 1999.
