Cuminseed, fennel prices spurt on speculative buying

AHMEDABAD, MARCH 13: The cuminseed prices spurted to fresh high of Rs 2,000 a 20 kilo, thanks to the speculative buying from stockists coupled with reserve selling by the farmers. According to a leading exporter, even though the area of cultivation area remains the same, the production is expected to decrease due to lower yield.The crop has been damaged by diseases at many places. The superior cuminseed crop, at present, fetches Rs 2,000-2,100 per 20 kilogram, while that of poor quality is quoted at around Rs 1,350-1,500 per 20 kg. The prices have improved by Rs 250 in last two weeks, and the daily arrivals at Unza is seen around 17,000-18,000 bags per day. At present, Saurashtra supplies a major chunk of cuminseeds.
