Sensex recovers 65 pts, markets stay jittery

Mumbai, April 5: The day after the bloodbath, the Sensex on Wednesdayrecovered 65.6 points but the markets remained jittery. Most players viewedthe rally with caution as they kept their fingers crossed over the directionNasdaq would take. The suspension of the I-T department action vis-a-visMauritius-based FIIs tamed, to some extent, the bears, but it was selectivebuying by domestic mutual funds and the overnight rise in Infy ADR on Nasdaqthat helped the Sensex post a gain.

The markets are still scurrying for a comfortable level. Although the Sensexclosed with a net gain of 65.60 points, market players expect some morevolatility in the current week.

The index closed higher, mainly on the back of a smart recovery in the indexheavyweight Infosys. Along with Infosys, HLL and Reliance gave good supportto the market and the latter topped the BSE turnover table with Rs 512.47crore. Overall, the market remained extremely volatile.

The position of other software stocks like Satyam Computers, Global Tele,NIIT, HFCL, DSQ Software, Rolta, Silverline and SSI however was far fromimpressive as their counters remained at the lower circuit for a major partof the day. Some investment buying, however, took place in the lasthalf-hour of trading in specific software stocks.

Meanwhile, pivotals more or less remained firm. ACC hit the upper circuit.HLL showed a gain of more than 4 per cent. Reliance also attract buyingafter an initial dip in the morning. Tisco also remained in the limelight.Mirroring the sentiment, the Sensex opened at 4616.36 points, touched a lowof 4601.58 points. It closed at 4757.06 points against the day's high of4852.45 points.

Similarily, the Nifty also gained five points and closed at 1433 points.While the high for the day was 1467.40 points, the low was 1391.65 points.Trading volumes improved on Wednesday with the BSE clocking Rs 2,350 croreand NSE Rs 3,399 crore. The number of advances also improved to 633. Thenumber of declines stood at 980 whereas around 129 stocks remained unchangedfor the day.

Stocks like ACC, Sterlite, BEL, Wockhardt, Shree Rama, Kesoram, Surana Tele,Recon, Lakshmi Overseas, Alkyl Amines, and Kothari Products hit the uppercircuit.

Other gainers for the day were: Tisco, HDFC, Guj Ambuja Cements, IndiaCements, Essel Packaging, Bharat Forge, Nath Seeds, BEML, Tata Info, SonataSoft, National Radio, Peerless Shipping, Tata SSL, Today's Writing, NBFootwear.

Stocks which hit the lower circuit were: Pentamedia, Zee, Satyam, NIIT,Silverline, Rolta, HCL Info, ICICI Bank, Aptech, DSQ Soft, HDFC Bank,Padmini Poly, Global Tele, SSI, HFCL, Escorts, Alok Text, Visualsoft, GVFilms, Maars Soft, Polaris, Adam Comsoft, Kale Consultants, Jain Studio.Other losers for the day were: Reliance Capital, BPL, BASF, Orient Info, MPTele, ATN International, Nocil, BPCL, Sri Sarita, Adarsh Der., Tata Finance,Filmcity Media, Shasun Chemicals, Jaiprakash, Epic Enzymes, Eicher Motors,Suven Pharma.
