DishnetDSL gets nod for seven more international gateways

Padmaja Shastri
Chennai, April 5: DishnetDSL Ltd has obtained Department of Telecom (DoT) approval to set up seven additional international gateways apart from the existing one in Chennai. The DoT has given permission to the Internet service provider (ISP) to set up gateways in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad, Kochi and Calcutta.

According to a press release, each of these gateways will initially support 9 mB of traffic and operate on the satellite system in the C-band frequency. The company has signed an agreement with Singapore Telecom for supply of international bandwidth.

The company has also contracted a total of 146 MB from VSNL to provide high speed downloads for its customers. Once the Singapore Telecom and VSNL bandwidth are made available, it would have the largest international bandwidth provided by any ISP in India, said the release.

With the expanded bandwidth facility of 218 Mb, the company is aiming at increasing the download speeds for its subscribers. For the dial-up subscribers this could imply a reduction in the telephone access charges payable to DoT, which are the majority of Internet access costs incurred.

For the DSL subscribers, the increased bandwidth would help customers in exploring the full potential of DSL service. DSL is a broadband Internet access and DishnetDSL's solution permits download speeds up to 1.5 mbps. Further, the broadband DSL service is designed to be totally free of any telephone access charge, said the release.
