Bullion flares up on overseas advices; wheat falls

Delhi, April 5: Both the precious metals, silver and gold, at the Delhi bullion market recorded a hefty rise on Wednesday on overseas advices.Investors were attracted to the bullion market due to fall in scrips, consequently, gold in London went up from $276.75 to $292 an ounce on Tuesday night and Wednesday noon, it was quoted at $284.50 an ounce, consequently, gold biscuit and standard mint gold shot up by Rs 70 at Rs 4450 and Rs 4460 per 10 gram, respectively and gold sovereign also firmed up by Rs 25 at Rs 3800-3825 per 8 gram.

New York silver future moved up from 502 cents to 512 cents an ounce coupled with fall in imported silver from 8000 kg to 4000 kg, consequently, spot silver .999 fineness, on support from upcountry buyers, shot up from Rs 7725 to Rs 7830 a kg and silver weekly delivery, on speculative buying and selling, moved up from Rs 7745 to Rs 7840 a kg.

Silver coins also improved by Rs 100 at Rs 10,800-11,000 per 100 pieces. Wedding demand in silver is expected to pick-up.

Urad tumbles
An easy-to-steady tendency was seen at the Delhi grains and pulses market on Wednesday.

Daily arrival of wheat from the neighbouring states in the local mandi as well as the flour mills was more than 10,000 bags coupled with weak upcountry demand at higher rates, wheat dara further slipped from Rs 690-700 to Rs 682-690 a quintal. Similarly, wheat desi of Madhya Pradesh fell by Rs 25 at Rs 925-1050 a quintal and roller flour mill atta, maida and suji dipped by Rs 5-10 at Rs 690, Rs 790 and Rs 795 per bag, respectively.

According to local traders, output of wheat, this season, is likely to fall from 720 lakh tonnes to 705 lakh tonnes. Barley plummeted by Rs 25-35 at Rs 510-565 a quintal on selling pressure of new barley.

Daily arrival of gram was reported more than 65 lorries and on profit-taking selling by the stockists, gram new and old declined by Rs 25 at Rs 1400 and Rs 1465 a quintal, respectively. Urad Rangoon and Maharashtra tumbled down from Rs 2350-2450 to Rs 2275-2380 a quintal due to weak demand.

Edible oils easy
Following packaging checking of edible oils by the weight and measure department officials on Tuesday, about 5-6 shopkeepers were challaned for selling packed oil without the name of the manufacturers and prices were also not quoted on the label.

Mill delivery oils, in edible section, fell by Rs 20-50 a quintal on Wednesday on weak overseas advices. Tax-paid palmolein slumped by Rs 60 at Rs 2600 a quintal and palm fatty acid fell by Rs 50 at Rs 1700-2000 a quintal on reports of arrival of a steamer at Kandla port.

Business in industrial oils remained sluggish.

Khandsari firm
In the wake of dull local as well as upcountry demand, business in mill delivery sugar remained sluggish on Wednesday.

Scattered demand in mill delivery sugar Mawana was reported at Rs 1561, Modi Rs 1448, Simbhouli at Rs 1441, Ram-Laxman Rs 1426, Dhanoura Rs 1436 and Amroha and Bulandshahr at Rs 1418 a quintal.

Khandsari prices ruled firm due to fall in arrivals. Khandsari cutting was quoted at Rs 1350 a quintal.

Turmeric slumps
Black pepper, at the Delhi spices market edged up from Rs 232-275 to Rs 240-280 a kg on hectic speculative buying by the Kochi operators. Cardamom small prices, on profit-taking selling fell from Rs 760-1000 to Rs 745-980 a kg and cloves, nutmeg and mace also slipped by Rs 5-10 a kg due to weak demand.

Turmeric, despite poor inflow in Erode mandi, tumbled down by Rs 50 a quintal. New Zeera Ganesh ruled firm at Rs 9700 while old was quoted at Rs 9250 a quintal. Water melon kernel shot up by Rs 200 at Rs 4200 a quintal on emergence of good demand from Gujarat buyers as well as Thandai manufacturers.

Among dry fruits, copra flared up by Rs 100 at Rs 4800-5300 a quintal on strong wedding demand.

Mentha oil declines
Mentha oil, flake and bold fell by Rs 8-10 to Rs 342, Rs 430 and Rs 475 per kg on easy Uttar Pradesh prices. Whereas due to slack arrivals, DMO and tartaric acid France firmed up by Rs 2-5 per kg.

Other chemicals were unchanged.

Nickel plate weakens
Due to stockist unloading, nickel plate Russia fell by Rs 10-15 to Rs 595-603 per kg and tin ingot went down by Rs 3 to Rs 393 per kg. Copper wire bar, rod, its wire increased by Re one to Rs 128.50, Rs 131.50 and Rs 135.50 per kg after companies hiked sales prices. Copper utensil, mixed scrap and wire scrap also firmed up by 50 paise per kg.

Other metals were unchanged.
