Kinetic Motor posts 23% growth in scooter sales

Geeta Nair
Pune, April 7: Bucking the downtrend in the scooter segment Kinetic Motor Co Ltd has posted a 23 per cent growth in scooter sales during the year 1999-2000. Kinetic is the only scooter major to show positive growth volume during this period. In comparison, the scooter segment as a whole showed a 9 per cent decline in volumes.

In the period between March 1999 and April 2000, Kinetic has sold 1,21,230 scooters. In March alone, Kinetic sold 12,184 scooters which was 49 per cent over the same month last year.

Company sources attributed growth in volumes to the recent introduction of Y2K scooters with an upgraded engine with lean burn technology. The updated version offers a mileage of 50 kmpl. ``We expect even more growth in the coming months given the product upgradation and the distribution expansion initiatives we are undertaking,'' Kinetic Motor Company executive director Sulajja Firodia Motwani said. A push for the Kinetic scooters has also come from the in-house finance companies, she adds. The rapid growth in consumer finance and other group companies has helped the group inch closer to the Rs 1,000 crore mark, which is a 25 per cent growth over last year.
