Dublin: Irish mining and exploration group MinMet Plc said that it planned to apply for more gold exploration rights in Portugal. MinMet said its subsidiary Connary Minerals Plc had agreed with the Portuguese mining licensing authority to apply for rights to a 57 square kilometre (22.01 sq mile) area around 170 kilometres (106 miles) east of Oporto and just south of Mirandela."This is just the beginning of a long-term commitment to exploration for precious metals in a country which has tremendous mineral potential," MinMet chairman Jeremy Metcalfe said in a statement. MinMet said 13 parallel quartz veins had been identified at the Freixeda Mine near Mirandela. The average grade of gold mined from the two most prominent veins was 13.9 g/t gold, the company said. MinMet already has operations in Portugal at the Castromil mine and the Valongo-Gondomar site. Copyright © 2000 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
