IGNP lift-irrigation schemes to be operational soon

Jaipur: Six major lift-irrigation schemes of the Indira Gandhi Canal Project (IGNP) will be operational by next month providing irrigation to five lakh hectares of barren land in Rajasthan.Nine out of 11 pumping stations of the Kolayat, Bangarsarand Gajner lift-irrigation schemes have been readied at a cost of over Rs 1,081 crore and about 756 cusec water would be available in Bikaner, Churu, Hanumangarh and Bikaner districts with the commissioning, IGNP and personnel minister DB Kalla said.Of the 19.63 lakh hectares of the area along the IGNP, 9.2 lakh hectares were already brought under cultivation, he said. The last lift-irrigation scheme Kanwarsen with a capacity to lift water above 60 feet was commissioned in 1974, and since then the work for the proposed three was underway, he said.Copyright © 2000 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
