Mauritius March sugar exports down 73%
Port louis
Mauritius sugar exports fell by 73 per cent to 5,910 tonnes in March from 22,141 a year earlier, the Public Relations Office of the Sugar Industry (Prosi) said. An industry official said that last year's low sugar output had impacted on exports. "Our exports these recent months have been very low as our production last year has suffered a lot," the official said. Mauritius exported 4,408 tonnes of sugar in February. Prosi said the bulk of March exports - 5,135 tonnes - went to the European Union under the Lome Sugar Protocol, while 549 tonnes went to the United States. The rest was sold on the world market. -- (Reuters) Copyright © 2000 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
