Mailjol -- Multilingual email on open standards

Geeta Nair
Pune, April 28: The first Indian language email service based on open standards, `mailjol', was launched by Pune-based mithi.com Pvt Ltd. The Web-based free email, mailjol, overcomes the problem of most of the existing language email services that use proprietary standards, which makes it hard for users to exchange information with other systems and software.

Using open standards of IISCII/Unicode, the mailjol email service will enable exchange of information in Indian languages with any other system based on the ISCII/unicode standards. Messages can be exchanged with users of any other mailing system also. Editing and further processing of the message is possible on mailjol. Tarun Malaviya, CEO, mithi.com, says it is being offered free of cost to increase the userbase and create brand value for the company.

Malaviya expects the mailjol product to grow in intelligence and move towards Indian language application. Mithi.com is talking to portals and service providers to make mailjol available on their sites. The company has got equity investment of $0.5 million. It would now be looking at venture funds to scale up the development work and build applications. As of now mailjol works in Assamese, Bengali, Hindi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil, Telgu and English. Malaviya has applied for a US patent for this product. Using fuzzy logic and language intelligence it makes it easy for anybody to write in an Indian language using a normal English keyboard.
