Mumbai, May 2: Infinity Venture Fund, a Rs 140-crore India-specific venture fund has invested in BrainVisa.com, an education portal which prepares students for competitive exams as well as offers them career counselling with the help of customized technology.Infinity has provided the Pune-based portal with its seed funding for an equity stake in the company. Infinity, however, did not disclose the extent of funding or the size of the stake acquired. On the issue of valuation and pricing for BrainVisa, Pratish Motwani, fund manager, Infinity, said "We have followed a dynamic pricing model linked to various milestones that we expect the company to fulfill".
Infinity plans to lead venture capital investors for the company's first round of venture capital funding which should be tied in sometime in the next four months according to Motwani.
BrainVisa was conceived in November last year when four entrepreneurs (three from IIM Ahmedabad and Lucknow alongwith an engineer from IIT) got together to develop an education portal.
BrainVisa has decided to focus on the competitive exams for admission into MBA courses as an entry point into the business according to Motwani. The company, which also employs an engineer each from Infosys and Microsoft, has developed a tool which customizes the learning material to suit various aptitudes. "It is a software engine which allows for adaptive learning," says Motwani. The tool has been developed so that it becomes customizable to suit various aptitudes so that students are tutored in a manner which best fits their needs.
For the moment, the site has put up its career counselling segment for which it plans to charge Rs 500 per student for use of its career aptitude testing technology which involves a two hour test. "We are examining opportunities to deploy this tool as well as charge the fee via schools," explains Supan Maheshwari, CEO, BrainVisa. The revenue model will be in operation from day one according to Maheshwari. BrainVisa has a network of professors in place for its career counselling segment and the site is expected to have most of its other segments operational by the end of May.
The software engine will gradually be deployed to create various customized services like a personalized `learning space' etc according to Motwani. BrainVisa plans to provide a slew of student related services eventually.
