Acer ties up with Wellwin to distribute IT peripherals

Nitya Varadarajan
Chennai, May 3: Acer Peripherals India Private Limited, a 100 per cent subsidiary of Acer Peripheral Inc, Taiwan has appointed Chennai-based Wellwin Industry Limited to distribute and service its products. These products will also be targeted at the B and C class cities whose market is growing more rapidly than metros, particularly in the western and southern segments. Addressing a media conference here on Tuesday, Wellwin managing director, R Rajagopalan said that the company was also talking to Acer for other partnerships which would help in running design centres, implement quality controls.

Acer is setting up a manufacturing facility in Pondicherry which would start with SKDs, then go on to establish MIS systems (with links to Malaysia), go on to CKDs before there is full-fledged manufacturing. The localisation work would begin soon and this too would expand gradually. Wellwin hopes to get into assembling work for Acer at a later date.

Acer has recently setup India offices, with the headquarters located in Mumbai and a branch office in Bangalore. This was done with the intention of planning investments for India ``which we see as a very important market, almost equivalent to China'' said Acer peripherals Asia pacific Vice President Y S Hung.

With India having a huge population the potential/success for Acer products was bound to be high as the Chinese operations. "The Chinese model would be implemented here,'' he said. Acer had invested $200million in China.

While Acer will bring in a product range such as CD media products, optical product range, scanners, photo printers, input devices. The company is also working on a mobile communications project and will be introducing cellphones at a later date. Acer also launched its fastest DVD-ROM drive, the product made its debut in Chennai on Tuesday.
