Jamshedpur, May 3: Tata Ryerson Ltd, a 50:50 joint venture between Tata Iron & Steel Co and Ryerson International of the US, will commission a cold rolled steel service centre here in July. The centre will have the capacity to handle 3.2 lakh tonnes of steel annually. Located adjacent to the recently inaugurated 1.2 million tonne cold rolling mill of Tisco, the service centre would add value to Tata Steel's cold rolled products according to the needs and specifications of the end-user."TRL will receive conversion charges from Tata Steel for the services provided," said B Muthuraman, vice-president (CRM) of Tata Steel. TRL has another service centre at Bara here with an annual capacity to handle 2.5 lakh tonnes of hot rolled coils.
While value-addition by TRL on cold rolled products find use in automobiles and white goods applications, its value-added hot rolled products like slit, pickled and oiled blanks and coils are used to manufacture automobile wheel rims and tubes. According to sources, the first phase of its new product processing unit (service centre) is on the verge of completion at a cost of Rs 25 crore. TRL, which has a processing facility in Pune apart from the two here, is into processing (conversion) for steel producers as well as customers. While the Ranjangaon HR processing facility in Pune went on stream in March 1999, the sales office at Calcutta and Faridabad became operational early this year. TRL's existing facilities here and at Pune have HR coil sitting lines, coil-to-coil acid pickling and oiling lines and versatile cut-to-length lines.
According to Ravi Inder Singh, the chief of business unit here, the company's products are used by the construction and automobile industry as well as by the trade sector, including big names like Telco, ITW Signode, Wheels India and Steel Strips.
