Chennai, May 3: Tamil Nadu has a stock of 10.46 lakh tonnes of rice which can sustain the public distribution system (PDS) for 10 more months, the state food minister KN Nehru, said on Wednesday.Nehru told the state assembly that the state Civil Supplies Corporation had a stock of 5.32 lakh tonnes of rice and paddy to produce 5.14 lakh tonnes. The allocation from the central pool was 1.3 lakh tonnes, he said. During the current long-term samba season 11.79 lakh tonnes of paddy was procured by the Civil Supplies Corporation. The corporation had decided to set up a bio-fertiliser plant at Madurai using husks, he said adding that it had also been decided to set up modern rice mills in the associate sector with state Civil Supplies Corporation's participation. Nehru said in all corporation godowns computerised scales would be introduced from this year.
Accepting the long-pending demand of the workers of the Central Co-operative Banks in the state, Nehru announced introduction of a pension scheme for them from this year.
