DTS readies action plan for 2000-01

Neeraja Kumar
New Delhi, May 10: The Department of Telecom Services (DTS) is planning to set up around 6000 Internet dhabas/cafes in all the block headquarters. Its plans for the year 2000-2001 also include starting cellular services in four States -- Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Naidu, West Bengal and Bihar.

Apart from this, DTS also plans to finalize new technologies for Village Public Telephones (VPTs). It is now considering C-DOT's Point-to-Multipoint (PMP), Wirless in Local Loop (WLL) and satellite technologies, because the Multi-Access Radio Relay (MARR) technology has not been found to be effective.

Meanwhile, the Sanchar Sagar Phase-I scheme consisting of high capacity 2.5 gigabits per second has been completed for seven rings. The remaining three rings will be completed soon. Sanchar Sagar Phase-II consisting of 32 rings having 2.5 gigabits pert second capacity is targetted to be completed in 2000-2001.

Digital Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) of 20 Gigabits per second capacity (initially to be equipped for 10 Gigabits per second ) will also be commissioned covering cities of Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Bangalore4, Hyderabad, Viajayawada and Chennai.Telephone access network, which is the weakest link (about 70% faults are in the access network) will be upgraded in a big way by introduction of WLL, High-bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line (HDSL) and Digital Loop Carrier (DLC) technologies. WLL to be introduced in a big way in the rural and urban areas. A major thrust area will also be in Intelligent Network (IN) services consisting of Free Phone (FP) and Virtual Card Calling (VCC) facilities in all 325 Secondary Switching Areas (SSAs).

Presently, these services are available in 44 cities. Also Integrated Servics Digital Network (ISDN) is at present available in 108 cities. All SSAs will be covered in 2000-2001.Major focus, apart from reducing the waiting list and increasing the VPTs, will be given for the Information Technology Z (ITZ) enabled services.
