Mahyco plans to seek GEAC's nod on Bt cotton

Our Bureau
Mumbai May 10: Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Co (Mahyco) plans to seek approval from Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (Geac) for the commercialisation of the controversial Bt cotton that promises safety from dreaded bollworm disease that disrupts cotton crop. The company had recently received clearance and authorisation from the Department of Biotechnology, ministry of science and technology on the subject. Accordingly, it now plans to seek clearance from Geac. Mahyco had been involved in conducting research experiments on Bt cotton for the last four years in a step-by-step manner, the company said in a statement.

Trials with the Bt cotton, conducted on around 50 locations, had been conducted after due authorisation from the regulatory authorities and due eveluation of data from each set of trials. Thus there is no permission for Mahyco to plant Bt cotton on a large scale.
