UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
Vijayawada, May 10: The State Trading Corporation (STC), which has been directed to intervene in the tobacco market by prime minister AB Vajpayee, is procuring the produce from farmers at a "snail's pace", according to Virginia Tobacco Farmers Association of India president Y Sivaji.

Sivaji, who was part of the delegation to New Delhi from Andhra Pradesh demanding crop holiday this year to resolve the problem of excess production, told newsmen here last evening that the STC had hardly procured 1.70 million kg from farmers so far, while the exporters and cigarettee manufacturers had procured 4.30 million kg from farmers, who were holding a stock of 140 million kg.
