Planning a new home always means looking at a big budget for woodwork. Andmost homemakers looking for ways of cutting costs. The husband-and-wifedesigner team of Renu and Robin Matharu are looking at exactly thispredicament and designing furniture that uses a mix of wood with metal andglass, to keep the prices down.Internal Affairs, the Matharus' showroom, located on the Ring Road inDelhi's Chittaranjan Park, stocks a wide range of furniture and accessoriesstarting at Rs 120 and going up to Rs 30,000. ``It is all very pocketfriendly. We are looking at young executives who are starting to build theirhomes. These people do not want very ornate furniture, but at the same time, they do look for a touch of class and modernity,'' says Matharu. ``Pure teakfurniture is becoming unaffordable and we are looking at innovative ways toreduce the cost,'' he continues.
For example, the Matharus have designed a side table out of rubber wood, which has the look of cedar, but is much cheaper. The side table has someelegant carving on it and costs less than Rs 3,000, while a teak woodversion would have cost at least 200 per cent more, says Renu.
Internal Affairs is an offshoot of the Matharus' interior decoratingbusiness. The couple have designed interiors for Dr Karan Singh's residence,Dr Dang's Laboratories and Berco's Noida restaurant, among others.
Robin and Renu, both graduates of the Delhi School of Planning andArchitecture, have also designed modular wardrobes to cut down the use ofwood and keep the prices lower. ``These wardrobes can be fitted directly onto the walls, instead of needing a wooden base built for them. There is nofear of seepage or spoiling of the wood, especially if the walls havewithstood two monsoons,'' explains Renu. They have also conceptualisedmodular cupboards for kitchens and bathrooms, which cost Rs 400-450 persquare foot and come with a seven-year guarantee. Internal Affairs has arange of 200-250 products, staring from candle stands to sofa sets and hugewardrobes, but each product has a unique touch. ``We want our products tostand out, so we make sure that the designs are unique,'' says Matharu.
``The basic idea is that any customer who walks in should be able to findsomething for his home,'' says Renu.
The couple also offer on the spot designing consulting to walk-in customers.``In case the person does not some of the features, or the budget is lower,we have a state-of-the-art CAD-CAM system, which will give them a 3-Ddrawing of the product they want within minutes and within a budget thatthey have in mind,'' explains Matharu. The Matharus' aim is to make thestore a one-stop design studio cum interior products outlet.
The Matharus have their own manufacturing unit on Mathura Road andmanufacture all their products themselves. ``We have very stringent qualitycontrol systems and ensure that all the products are flawless,'' saysMatharu. The store has three floors catering to various segments of the homefrom the drawing room to the kitchen to the bedroom, along with accessoriesfor each room. The Matharus are hoping to expand their collection soon and, with their unique range, make Internal Affairs the most talked aboutinteriors store in the Capital.
