Titan Ind identifies watches, jewellery as strategic units

Bangalore, May 12: Watch major Titan Industries Ltd in a step towards streamlining operations has identified its two key businesses, watches and jewellery, as strategic business units. To this end, the company has effected a senior level organisational revamp effective May 15.

Bhaskar Bhat, who heads the newly constituted watch business unit as its chief operating officer, said, ``We are looking at building up relevant skills and expertise to address the two different markets with increased focus. The SBU concept was the obvious way for us to go.''

He said there was no move to spin off the SBUs and they would continue to function as part of the same company. Formerly Titan's watch division senior vice-president for sales and marketing, Bhat will also be responsible for other corporate functions including human resources and international operations.

Jacob Kurien (formerly the vice president marketing) will head the jewellery business unit as the chief operating officer (jewellery) while Bijou Kurien will take over as the vice-president marketing and sales of the watch business unit.

The manufacturing operations and product development activities of the watch units will be headed by MS Shantaram and BG Dwarkanath designated as the chief manufacturing officer and chief technology officer respectively.RC Hari Rao (formerly the senior vice president- manufacturing) has been appointed as the chief technical advisor, consequent to his retirement at the end of quarter 1.
