Chennai: Chennai-based Lastech Systems Pvt Ltd has developed a state-of-the-art Internet solution called JULI - Java-based Universal Language Interface - that has been pioneered for Indian language-based Websites. JULI makes it possible to use Indian languages on the Net, without the need for downloading specific fonts or software to the user's system. The technology can be used to design Websites for applications such as Web-based Indian language mail, chat, Web directories and search engines. By using the tool, Web developers can provide end-users with an anytime, anywhere Internet experience in their own language. Speaking to the Financial Express, director M Thulukkanam said the company had earlier packaged a software called Indomail. This was an e-mail client software distributed through Satyam Infoway. However users had to purchase the software separately, to send mail. JULI was a tremendous improvement on this, as the software got instantly downloaded from the server into the user's machine uponaccessing a particular language site.
To prove the point, Lastech has launched 11 Web-based mail www.assamesemail.com, hindipatra.com, marathimail.com, sinhalamail.com, bengalimail.com, kannadamail.com, oriyamail.com, telugulekha.com, gujaratimail.com, malayalapathram.com and punjabiemail.com apart from the recently launched tamilanjal.com. It proposes to retain some sites like Tamil, Telugu and Hindi, while it will sell the others. Meanwhile the company is open to licensing the technology. The target customers will be ISPs and Web developers who will have access to a wide user base.
The distinct advantage of the technology is that it can be operated across several platforms - Windows, Mac, Linux etc., and with various browsers - Internet Explorer, Netscape Communicator. JULI is also unicode compliant. It maybe recalled that Microsoft's OS 2000 facilitates use Hindi and Tamil, which are unicode compliant.
However, the languages are not accessible to those who do not have OS 2000, but are operating on other platforms. The other encryption which is commonly followed is ISCII, which is DOS-based. By using JULI, the surfer need only key in the e-mail message without downloading a font or software or using a language oriented keyboard. Likewise the recipient can directly view the message. JULI can be installed by simply "plugging" it in, according to Thulukkanam. Lastech has been in the printing and publishing business for many years and has its own database and DTP software in various languages.
The company has been working on JULI for the last one year. With the basic breakthrough, the technology will be used to encompass other languages such as French, etc. The company also plans to launch in the future, language engines (like Yahoo), and Web directories. It is coming out with a public issue in October with the issue size being Rs 5 crore. Last year the company had revenues of Rs 65 lakh.
