Calcutta, May 15: TATA Engineering & Locomotive Co (Telco) on Monday launched the petrol version of its Indica car in Calcutta. Named Indica 2000, the car has a 1400 cc engine which generates 75 BHP and is capable of propelling the car from zero to 60 kmph in less than six seconds, a record in this category.Complete with power steering and windows, dual tone centre cluster and console, the Indica 2000 will be available here at ex-showroom prices of Rs 2,78,400 to Rs 4,21,500.
The PL model will be available at an ex-showroom price of Rs 2,78,400, the LEI (Solid) at Rs 3,35,500, the LEI (Metallic) at Rs 3,39,700 and the LXI (Metallic) at Rs 4,21,500.
The comparable ex-showroom prices of the diesel (Euro II) version are: Rs 3,20,400 for the DL model, Rs 3,44,100 for DLE (Solid), Rs 3,48,300 for the DLE (Metallic) and Rs 4,28,700 for DLX.
Telco sold 86,836 passenger cars and utility vehicles during 1999-2000. In April 2000, 5,143 Indicas were sold, is a gain of 207 per cent over the 1,676 sold in April 1999. In 1999- 2000, it sold a total of 54,480 cars, or 21 per cent of cars in the same category, and 8.8 per cent of the total passenger car market.
"Our target is to sell another 90,000 by April next year," said SG Saksena, regional manager of Telco's passenger car division.
The launch of the the petrol version will not split up the diesel car market of Tata Indica. "The petrol car will have a market of its own and we wish to register a growth of 25 per cent from the sales of Indica 2000," said Saksena.
