Maximise airportutilisation,says Yadav

Aparna Kalra
New Delhi, May 15: Civil aviation minister Sharad Yadav has expressed the view that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) should maximise airport utilisation and revenue generation from airports. The AAI should take steps to rationalise route navigation facilities, he has added.

An official release said that in a performance review meeting, Yadav said that the route navigation charge should be related to the distance coveredby the airline and should not be based on landings by an aircraft, the minister pointed out.

On airport charges, the minister said that the charge should be levied in a way as to facilitate the small operators to operate unutilised airfields also. The charge can vary from one airport to another and can be higher for peak hours. This move would promote regional airports.

Yadav said that efforts should be directed towards generating more revenue from the non-aeronautical sources. AAI earns only 35% revenue from this source. He pointed out that the surplus land available to AAI can be developed and converted into commercial complex, recreational centre etc so that the organisation can generate more revenue. He said that the states where the airport land has been encroached upon, he would be personally writing to the chief ministers to intervene in the matter.

The minister stated that careless and casual attitude of the officials at the airports must be corrected. He insisted that realistic estimate of flight information should be provided to the passengers to avoid inconvenience to them. Information on delay or cancellation of the flights should also be communicated at the first opportunity. He also said that there should be a system of reward for people doing commendable job for the organisation.
