German homoeopath major chalks out expansion strategy

Sanjay Sardana
New Delhi, May 31: The $350 million global homoeopathic major Dr Willmar Schwabe has charted a major expansion plan for India. Dr Willmar Schwabe India, the Indian subsidiary, plans to set up around 60-70 exclusive franchise showrooms across the country over the next two to three years.

The franchise showrooms, providing the one-stop homoeopathic consultancy and full range of the company's products, will be the first-of-its-kind marketing effort by the German company in any country.

Apart from this, the Indian subsidiary has plans to expand its `homoeopathic on wheels' to around 30 from the current level of three.

The company aims to achieve a turnover of Rs 32-33 crore and hopes to break even for the year ending December 2000 against Rs 20 crore reported for year ended December 1999.

The company has set its sights on making the homoeopathic medicine available through the chemist shops and market some of its medicines used for common ailments as over-the-counter (OTC) products. To market the homoeopathic medicines, the chemists will have to obtain a license from the drug controller which is not a tedious process, said a senior company official.

After the successful launch of its Kindi range, the company is launching the Alpha range which will be marketed in a blister pack. The Alpha range would include homoeopathic tablets for ailments like decongestion, nausea/vomiting, acidity & flatulence, acute & chronic tonsillitis and triple action therapy for total relief from sinusitis.

Marketing the products through chemist shops will serve the twin benefit of easy availability and fighting the duplicacy often faced in homoeopathic medicines.

Schwabe India has already set up around four exclusive franchise showrooms which serve as a one-stop-shop for Schwabe's entire range of homoeopathic medicines including dilutions, mother tinctures, low attenuation trituration tablets and other specialty medicines. Similarly, homoeopathy on wheels will offer similar services and the company has already launched three such franchise mobile vans. These franchise showrooms and mobile vans will also offer consultancy by homoeopathic doctors.
