Los Angeles, June 7: Joe Roth, former chairman of Walt Disney Studios, onTuesday unveiled his long-awaited plans for a new movie and Internetcompany, Revolution Studios, backed by $3 billion from Fox Entertainment,Sony Pictures and TV content provider Starz Encore Group.Revolution will make six movies a year over six years, ranging from bigbudget action flicks such as the upcoming $135 million "Pearl Harbour" Rothokayed at Disney, to low budget comedies like the recent "Deuce Bigalow:Male Gigolo."
The company already has film production deals in place with major stars likeJulia Roberts and Adam Sandler.
Along with moviemaking, Revolution will focus on Internet content via itsMediaTrip division, http://www.mediatrip.com. The company also co-owns asite called Distant Corners that will concentrate on science fiction andhorror stories for the Net.
"We're kind of a new studio that's just interested in creating a lot ofcontent," Roth said.
The veteran movie executive who has run Disney's and 20th Century Fox's filmstudios, called Revolution "a dream come true" because he will finally holdthe financing to produce his own slate of movies instead of another studio's.He left Disney in January after five years in which Disney released numerousbox office sensations such as computer animated hits like "Toy Story" and"Toy Story 2," as well as live-action thrillers, "The Sixth Sense" and"Armageddon."
In January, Roth said he was leaving to form his own movie company but sofar details have been scant.
Because Revolution will make the films, retain ownership of the negativesand build a library of titles, it will be more like a mini-studio than astandard production company.
In that way, Revolution is taking a similar approach to that of Dreamworkswhen it was formed by Steven Spielberg, David Geffen and former Disneyexecutive, Jeffrey Katzenberg.
At its launch, however, DreamWorks planned to build a major studio complexin Los Angeles, and it promised to be a sort of digital studio that wouldembrace all sorts of new technology. So far, it has built an animationstudio in an LA suburb.
Revolution will maintain a headquarters in the LA-area beach community ofSanta Monica, and among its Internet and movie divisions will employ justover 100 people or so.
Roth is bringing two former Disney executives, Todd Garnerand Rob Moore, toRevolution and making them equity partners. Garner was co-president ofDisney's film production wing, Buena Vista Motion Pictures Group, and Moorehad been executive vice president of operations and finance at Walt DisneyStudios.
"The fact that we all worked together for five-plus years makes our jobsthat much easier," Roth said.
Fox, Sony and Starz, which provides premium movie channels for cable andsatellite TV operators, receive a minority equity position in the newcompany for their $3 billion investment.
Sony also gains theatrical and video distribution rights to Revolution's 36planned films. Fox receives TV rights to air the films on the Fox broadcastnetwork, cable networks like FX, and in syndication. Starz grabs domesticpay-TV rights.
Revolution already has 25 movie projects in development, and on Monday beganshooting its first film, called "Tomcats."The Internet piece of the businessmay be more interesting down the road as it attempts to push the boundariesof cutting-edge content for the Web.
Roth said MediaTrip already has drawn some 250,000 voters in a contest itlaunched to pick an unknown actor for a role in "Tomcats," and he added a12-minute short film called "George Lucas in Love" was so popular thecompany began selling a videocassette of it through Amazon.com.Finally, hesaid Revolution may eventually try to build TV show ideas from its Internetproductions but for now, it will remain "first and foremost a movie andInternet company."
