Roman vernacular -- Mailjol takes the tedium out of Indian language e-mail

R Ravichandran
Hyderabad, June 7: Indian e-mail subscribers can now connect to their near and dear in their own mother-tongue on the Internet. The good thing is that they do not even have to know typing in the language they want to communicate. Log on to www.mailjol.com to send free e-mail messages in 11 Indian launguages, apart from English, on the site which has been set up by Pune-based Mithi.com, which was formerly known as Men at Work Pvt Ltd.

The Telugu e-mail service, available since April 28, already has over 17,000 registered users from India and abroad, says Ashok Malaviya, vice president mithi.com who was here on Tuesday to showcase the site. The company expects close to one million mailjol users by the year end. The uniqueness of mailjol.com is that its uses the 16 bit ISCII/Unicode open standards enabling easy translation of English script into any Indian language. The site is based on the LEAP platform, a multi-lingual word processor developed by C-DAC. There is no need to download fonts or software to use the site while each user gets five mb of space on the site all for free. mithi.com is also targeting revenues from development of customised networks for corporates.
