Asian stocks close mixed
Tokyo, June 7: Asian stocks closed mixed Wednesday with some key markets shrugging off the lower close on Wall Street overnight. Markets in Hong Kong and Singapore closed slightly higher on interest in key blue chip stocks. Share prices in Tokyo closed 0.1 per cent lower, hit by drops in high-technology issues and the yen's jump against the dollar, brokers said. The key Nikkei-225 index fell 25.12 points to end at 17,144.96 on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. "From the outset, investors sold off high-tech, export-linked issues following a decline in New York yesterday," said Tatsuo Kurokawa, senior market analyst at Nomura Securities. The yen's spike against the dollar in New York also hurt exporters, dealers said. "On top of the New York decline, the yen's rapid advance pressured high-technology issues as many of them depend heavily on exports," Nikko Securities market analyst Kazue Mayuzumi said. Share prices in Hong Kong rose 0.2 per cent as the market consolidated recent sharp gains. The key Hang Seng index gained 38.38 points to close at 15,900.06 -- its seventh consecutive gain.
