Centre may open up submarine gateway
The government is considering the possibility of opening up the submarinegateway, said Shyamal Ghosh, secretary, Department of Telecommunications, ata panel discussion on "Technology Directions and Applications - Agenda forIndia" at the "Technology Innovation and Impact Summit" jointly organised byCII and Lucent Technologies on Thursday. Bharti Enterprises has initiated the process of organisational restructuringat the group and operating company level. This is in line with Bharti'srecent pan-India expansion. As a first step towards this process, SanjayKapoor, chief operating officer of Bharti Cellular Ltd, Delhi's cellularservice provider undner the brand name AirTel, has been appointed chiefexecutive officer of Bharti Cellular Ltd. He takes over from Anil Nayar whowill now move to the corproate headquarters of Bharti Enterprises to assumea larger corporate role.

Hutchison Max has entered into a tie up with Ibaya.com, a shopping portal,for a shopping service using wireless application protocol (WAP) technology.Hutchison's Orange is one of the five cellular operators in the world tooffer this service. Ibaya.com offers Orange customers books, music CDs andgifts at competitive price compared to the open market. The introduction ofthis service will boost the use of transaction-based possibilities on thecellular phone.
HCL Tech to set up $2.1b development centre
HCL Technologies has announced that it would set up a $2.1 billiondevelopment centre for Conexant Systems in India. HCL has signed athree-year non-exclusive contract to support, maintain and deploy newtechnologies for the US-based communication semiconductor company. Under thepartnership programme, HCL would provide business analysis services insupport of supply chain management, programming services and development ofinternal productivity enhancing applets, maintenance of manufacturingexecution system applications. The development centre would bring all teamsworking in India on Conexant under one roof.
PM asked to review Vaish's appointment as DTS secy
Indian Post and Telegraph Accounts and Finance Service Association has senta letter to the Prime Minister to review the appointment of Vinod Vaish assecretary in the department of telecom services (DTS). The association alsoproposed the name of A Prasad, member (finance) in the Telecom Commission,as secretary. The officers of the association will observe mass casual leaveon Friday in support of their demand.
