AOL, Intertrust in anti-piracy agreement

New York: Internet service provider America Online Inc (AOL) said on Tuesday that it plans to use Intertrust Technologies Corp's (ITRU) software to allow music and video to be securely downloaded from the Internet. The companies hope their deal is the next step toward selling digital music, video and text files over the Internet, while protecting copyrighted material from piracy. AOL said its first use for the security software will be for its winamp digital music player for downloading music files, which will now be compatible with music files that are encoded using Intertrust technology. As the distribution of music and other media files over the Internet gains wide acceptance, the ability to control piracy is a key concern among many media companies. The concern is epitomised by the record industry's battles with several Internet companies, such as Napster Inc and MP3.com Inc MPPP.O, accusing them of infringing copyright law. The increasing popularity of the MP3 format, which converts music into small digital files that are easy to store and copy, has given rise to companies like Intertrust.
