Industry wary of delay in opening up of NLD telephony
The delay in opening up the national long distance (NLD) telephony beyond the committed date of January 1, 2000, has already led to a loss of Rs 2,000 crore to the economy. Stating this on Thursday, private operators castigated attempts by DoT to subvert the recommendations of the TRAI by introducing open bidding for the award of licences. The government on Thursday approved setting up of a standing committee to oversee the provisions of leased circuits and bandwidth requirements of the department of telecom services (DTS), MTNL and the telecom industry. The proposed committee comprises chairman Telecom Commission as its chairman; senior deputy director general (DDG) customer services as its convener and 12 other members including secretary, MIT, drawn from government as well as industry organisations.
Computing products dominate hardware market:
IDC Computing products continue to dominate the Indian hardware market accounting for 69 per cent in value, IDC (India)'s market tracking programs has said. In 1999-00, computing products accounted for 69 per cent of the hardware market by value ahead of peripherals and data communication equipment, which had growth rates of 30 per cent and 35 per cent respectively in the same period in 1999-00.Caltiger.com acquires Rajkot-based ISP
Caltiger.com, India's first free ISP has acquired a Rajkot based ISP, Sun Infoway by making a payment of $1000 per subscriber to acquire a subscriber base of 200, according to a company press release. Caltiger.com currently has a subscriber base of over 2,00,000. Rajkot is the 14th city to have the Caltiger.com connection.

Nokia ties up with Realnetworks Inc
Nokia has joined hands with Realnetworks Inc, leader in media delivery on the Internet, to develop and distribute Internet media technology for future mobile devices. As part of the agreement, Nokia and Realnetworks will implement Realnetworks' Realplayer technology in Nokia's EPOC-based communicators and smart phones.
