Centre may allow pvt terrestrial Net gateways
The country's private Internet service industry, desperate for smooth, affordable communications bandwidth, can look forward to a crucial policy decision to ease up supply, officials said. A key policy-maker said the Government was expected to announce within the next 10 days a decision to allow private companies to lay international terrestrial cables, ending the state-run Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd's monopoly.

Yahoo! unveils Indian operations
Yahoo! Inc. a leading global Internet portal, on Thursday unveiled its Indian operations by launching the portal www:Yahoo.co.in specially targeted at Indian web users and those with special regional interest. The portal has tied in about 40 local content partners for channels on news, finance, cricket, movies, greetings, and weather.

Human Development Index
Propelled by a robust growth in per capita income, India has improved its rank four notches to 128 on the Human Development Index calculated on the basis of life expectancy, educational attainment and standard of living.

MIP 2000 mops up around Rs 500 cr
The Unit Trust of India has mobilised about Rs 500 crore in its Monthly Income Plan which closed for subscription last Saturday. The collection figures for MIP 2000 (series II) is yet to be finalised, as collections from a large number of centres are still pouring in, say sources.

Exim Bank plea to Centre
The Export-Import Bank of India has made a strong pitch before the government to allow it to raise low-cost foreign currency deposits for on-lending to its clients. The institution hopes a positive response will enable it to reduce its cost of funds drastically and venture aggressively into meeting the short-term capital needs of its clients.

Balance of payments surplus rises
The balance of payments surplus in 1999-'00 was boosted by a heavy inflow of foreign investment in the last 3 months and strong growth in software exports, economists said on Thursday. Intel's Pentium-class chip is one of the most widely recognised brands in the world.

Sharma may be new MTNL CMD
Narendra Sharma is slated to succeed S Rajagopalan as the new chairman and managing director of the state-owned MTNL. Sharma is currently working as secretary, TRAI.

Mumbai HC okays merger
The Mumbai high court on Wednesday approved the merger of Ashok Leyland Information Technology with Hinduja Finance Corporation. The Chennai high court's approval is expected by July 21. The merger would be effective from July 1, 1999.

Federal Reserve rates unchanged
The US Federal Reserve, amid signs that the red-hot economy may be cooling a bit, has decided to leave a key interest rate unchanged. As a result, the federal funds rate will stay at 6.5 per cent, the highest level in nine years.
