A chic collection

HUMA SIDDIQUI
Chrome has created summer sizzlers that are great to chill out in. The brain-child of Geetanjalee and Deepak Aggarwal, the husband-wife duo, Chrome creates clothing that is chic, yet comfortable. Bringing stretch to cotton knots, Geetanjalee cuts styles with halter necks, cross backs, slip dress styles and a tie back that is a take off from the Indian choli.

Mixing fitted cotton lycra with soft, pre-washed denims, the duo has designed a variety of formals, semi-formals and casual clothes. There is also a very special clubwear collection that adds the glitz of gold and shimmer of silver to an otherwise sensible and sedate collection.

Geetanjalee, a keen designer, realised that western-wear for most urban youth is associated with clubwear. Although in the daytime they are happy wearing a basic T-shirt with branded jeans, in the evening they seek excitement, adventure and exclusivity in their clothes. The guiding force being `to make waves as you enter a party', says she.

And for all these adventurous souls, Chrome has combined straight lined slip dresses with sassy jackets, wrap skirts with short cropped tops, a wide range of tailored suits and a range of tunics in various hues of pastel pinks, blues and greens. The morning look is basic. "Who can look over the top in this heat?" quips Geetanjalee. The styling is free spirited. Space and freedom of movement being crucial. These qualities come through in Cargo for men and Capri's pants for women.

The shirts for men are in brushed cottons, the trousers in fine gabardine. Styling emerges in the form of pockets, lapels and zippers.

The label propounds not just a look but a complete life-style that is pro-active, contemporary and international. A philosophy that promotes an exposed, peaceful and tolerant state-of-mind.

"As the world shrinks before the Net and we move into a seamless horizon that is dotted with a convergence of styles, Chrome presents a look that is hip yet not hyped, chic yet underplayed, stylish but basic. In fact pret in the true sense. Chrome reflects real sensibility that is rooted and not coloured in the least by overplayed ramp surrealism that penetrates deep into the Indian fashion scenario," says Geetanjali.

"With Chrome the attempt is to fill this need of style that most urban Indians feel. The young lot today prefers no fuss clothing. With Chrome our attempt is to offer casual clothing option right here in India," she adds.Chrome's launch collection for the summer of 2000 incorporates casual clothing for both women and men. Cool, breezy fabrics in subtle pastels get cut into trousers, cargoes, mid-calves, shirts, T-shirts and vests. The women's collection also incorporates linear linked skirts, tank tops and tunics. In both the men's and the women's collection the emphasis is on styling.

As Deepak puts it, "The beginning is small but we plan to have a multi-faceted design house around the label that eventually creates just about everything an urban Indian needs in his wardrobe: Shoes, bags, accessories, etc. But for the beginning, it's chic and elegant wears that Chrome will promote, refurbishing their eclectic and trendy store each fortnight with new merchandise. After all it is the Net age and the real has to be as quick in change as the virtual.''
