`IT industry lags behind telecom in revenue generation'
telecom industry far outpaces the IT industry in terms of revenues. While the telecom sector generated a revenue of $12 billion last year, the total output of the IT sector (including exports) was $8 billion. These were the findings of sixth Voice and Data (V&D) 100 annual survey of the communications industry for the year 1999-2000. The survey revealed that spurred by liberalised policies and a resurgent economy, the telecom industry has grown by 22 per cent in 1999-2000 to reach a combined turnover of Rs 53,173.5 crore in 1999-2000 from Rs 43,609.4 crore in the previous year.

IT ministry plans Rs 500cr centre for excellence
Ministry of information technology is considering setting up a centre for excellence to develop software for United Nations agencies with an estimated project cost of up to Rs 500 crore. "The estimated cost of the project in India would ultimately be between Rs 400 crore and Rs 500 crore. We would be approaching the UN soon for funding majority of the project," ministry sources said in New Delhi, reports PTI. The centre for excellence would leverage on India's existing strength of software professional to design and develop solutions for all UN agencies including UNESCO and UNDP amongst others, they said.

Consultative committee on IT to meet tomorrow
The 17-member Parliamentary Consultative Committee on Information Technology (MIT) will hold its third meeting in Bangalore on July 12 under the chairmanship of minister for information technology Pramod Mahajan, official sources said in New Delhi on Monday. The committee is expected to discuss the agenda of IT for the masses campaign unleashed by the MIT and ways to leverage India's rapid strides in IT to educate the masses, sources said.

TCS partners with Broadvision
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has entered into an alliance with Broadvision, a California-based personalised e-business applications provider, to offer the latter's business solutions in India. TCS would architect, implement, support and consult for Broadvision to help enhance customer experience and enable them go `live' with dynamic, interactive applications for online marketing of any scope, a TCS release said in Mumbai on Monday. The solutions would enable companies to rapidly deploy and effectively operate secure, scalable, intelligent and flexible E-business applications.
