Embodying the modernist element

Mandira Sharma, Harsh Vardhan Sharma and Narendra Pal Singh, now exhibiting their work at the Sridharani Gallery in Delhi, are artists strongly based in the colour and textures that emerge from them. They embody that element of modernism that concentrates on the material quality of paint as pigment, and highlighting its volume is strong in all three artists.

However, beyond that, each one has an individual expression. Mandira is always present in her canvases, either looking in from the outside or looking out from the inside. The element of the artist as voyeur is very strong in her work, which looks at everyday life from many unusual angles.

Harsh Vardhan, on the other hand, plants his window on the canvas itself. He is not a voyeur, but participates in the growth of forms from the initial blobs of colour that discolour the canvas before it is transfigured with layer on layer of colour. He lives inside each canvas and one can sense the human presence in each of his works.

Narendra Pal Singh has both colour and texture at his command, as well as a very personal form of expression. This form is able to comprehend the meaning of space travel, high flying life and the made up presentation after a visit to the beauty parlour, on the one hand, and the ambience of the scarecrow village revelry and the acrobatics we resort to, to keep the illusion going that nothing has changed, on the other.

Narendra Pal interweaves the changing and unchanging in works of vibrancy that remind one that even at times when nothing seems to change, it does. In this way, he succeeds in giving a vibrant image of Indian life today, whose different aspects are explored by these three young people, obviously in love with their lives. It is an exhibition that is bound to give zest to the season ahead.
