US, Japan reach accord over telecom row
The United States and Japan have reached an accord to settle a telecommunications trade row, US trade representative Charlene Barshefsky said in a telephone press conference on Tuesday in Washington. "This deal opens Japan's telecommunications market to genuine competition and should save telecommunications carriers around the world more $2 billion over the next two years," Barshefsky said in a statement.The two sides were scrambling to stop a row over the interconnection fees charged by Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp (NTT) that had been overshadowing this week's G8 Summit, scheduled for July 21 in Okinawa, Japan. In Tokyo, the NTT executives on Wednesday bemoaned their fate after the US clinched a breakthrough telecommunications trade deal with Japan's government.
IT exports to EU $842 m in 1999-2000: ESC
European Union countries are fast emerging as major markets for Indian software exports with an annual 23 per cent growth and $842 million worth of exports in 1999-2000. "India's exports of electronics and computer software/services to the EU in the last five years (1994-95 to 1998-99) have recorded an average annual growth of 23 per cent and this is expected to accelerate further," executive director of Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC) D K Sareen said in New Delhi on Wednesday.
Stressing that the EU is fast emerging as the major market for IT exports, second only to the USA, he said: "traditionally, the UK has been the major market for Indian software/services exports. Of the total value of exports to EU, more than 60 per cent is accounted for by UK". For 1999-2000, IT exports to UK stood at $531.25 million of the total $842 million.

Wipro Technologies has set up an Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) Competency Center in Bangalore to create an architecture that will support legacy to web integration. Wipro has selected Sun's Forte Fusion application integration suite which would facilitate integrated business processes to be deployed across multiple application systems.
