Be quick to log on to Net security, says e-guru

Ranit Mukherji
Calcutta, July 19: Next time you send messages or exchange information on the Internet, watch out for the dynamic host configuration protocol, use soft tokens for a single PC and polynomials for receiving signals, and know once for all that while public and private keys go hand in hand, each decrypting what the other encrypts, public key crypto-systems would be happy with nothing other than IP security option layer.

Zapped? Trust Eugene R Deutsch to "ping" it all for you. Deutsch, Cisco Systems' Singapore-based training programmes manager of Asia Pacific Education Programmes, has taught 200-plus classes in routing, FDDI, ATM, WAN and ethernet. And now he is in India to download his 24 years of experience in computer technology.

At a workshop in Calcutta meant primarily for media persons, Eugene explained the importance of Internet security and the seven layers involved therein: application, presentation, session, transport, network, datalink and physical layers.

"It is high time that Net users, particularly Internet service providers, knew all about Net transmission and the risks involved," said Eugene. "In the near future more than half of international transactions will happen on the Internet and unless one becomes well-versed in the modalities, one can only end up as a misfit," he added.
