Philips slips to 7th position in CTV market

Arpan Mukherjee
Calcutta, July 20: Philips India Ltd's ranking in the colour television market (CTV) has slipped further to 7th position. In April this year, the consumer electronics major was ranked 6th.The company is changing its strategy, with the focus now on the smaller 20 and 40 inch CTVs.It is planning to introduce nine models in the sub-25 inch segment over the next nine to ten months, some of which will be in the 14 and 20 inch category.

Philips senior vice-president Rajeev Karwal, who is in charge of consumer electronics, feels that the new models will be the "right ammunition" to take on the competition. He pointed out that 53 per cent of the Indian market is in the 14 and 20 inch segment.Philips India has reported a net loss of Rs 15.35 crore for the first six months of the current fiscal, against a net profit of Rs 5.38 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year. The company's share of the CTV market has been shrinking since 1996, when it was 11 per cent.
