MoU signed for 7 hydro power projects in J&K

New Delhi, July 20: A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed on Thursday between the ministry of power and the J&Kgovernment for implementation of seven hydroelectric projects in the state aggregating 2,798 mw.State-owned National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) would implement the 330 mw Kishanganga hydel project, 280 mw Uri stage-II, 1,020 mw Bursar, 120 mw Sewa stage-II, 1,000 mw Pakal Dul, 30 mw Nimmo Bazgo and 18 mw Chutak hydel projects on build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) basis.

The MoU transferring the projects to NHPC was signed by power minister P R Kumaramangalam and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Farooq Abdullah. "These projects will be executed in the central sector through NHPC in phases and completed in a period of seven years," Kumaramangalam said at the signing ceremony.Central government would be chipping in with 15 per cent of the project cost while the remaining cost would be funded through market borrowings, he said adding J&K would get 12 per cent free power from these projects besides its normal share and an additional 15 per cent central share of unallocated power at bus bar rates to meet its need for winter peak requirement.While Kishanganga, Uri stage-II and Bursar hydel projects would be taken up immediately, the remaining would be done in phases, Abdullah said.
