Jaipur: The Gehlot government has approved an improved version of its IT policy 2000 to take maximum advantage of the dot com revolution now sweeping the entire country. The policy aims at paving the way for the new knowledge economy, says Deependra Singh Shekhawat, Minister for Information and Technology.The policy has been drafted in such a way so that Rajasthan takes the maximum advantage of the emerging opportunities. Says Shekhawat "the overall development of IT sector in Rajasthan is not possible without creating synergy between the three core strategies - growth of the IT industry, developing core competencies in IT-based human resource development and increased investment by the government in creating a functional system of e-governance that has effective IT-driven citizen-government interfaces. The minister said that the Government was strongly committed to make Rajasthan a major player in the IT sector of the country. "The new IT policy is the culmination of this vision".
Elaborating on the policy Rohit Kumar Singh, Director of Information Technology Department, said that the new policy also aimed at creating upgradation in IT infrastructure in the State as well as developing core human resource. Singh said that the IT industry was expected to be $600 billion US industry by the year 2005 and the recent technological advances like the Internet had diluted the geographical, physical, political and even sociological boundaries. The success would be dominated by inputs from and to the information technology industry.
The IT system of governance, known as e-governance, had reduced costs and the citizens were now being served in a better way. Rajasthan was one of the front-runner states in the country in the use of IT in the government. The new policy provided several tax and other incentives to position the state as an attractive destination for development and growth of IT industry.
