Mamata calls for strict austerity measures

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
New Delhi, Aug 2: Railways minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday cautioned railway officials against any slow down in the austerity measures while calling for vigorous efforts to augment income from non-conventional sources.

Addressing the conference of financial advisers and chief accounts officers of the zonal railways and production units here, Banerjee said efforts should be made for commercial exploitation of railway land and air space and advertising on rolling stock and platforms.

The minister also underlined the need for strict monitoring of projects and expenditure on procurement and called for adoption of a quick file disposal and logical decision making process in all spheres of operations, an official release said.

At a meeting with the chiefs of public sector undertakings in the field of manufacturing and supplying wagons to railways yesterday, Banerjee said the ministry's orders for various materials to be procured from public sector units had exceeded Rs 4,134 crore which was the highest so far.

She said another important concession to the wagon supplying public sector units was that the recovery proceedings of unutilised advance would be relaxed by a month this year.
