PM launches PGCIL'soptical fibre link

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
New Delhi, Aug 2: Prime Minister A B Vajpayee on Wednesday commissioned the Powergrid Corporation of India Ltd's Delhi-Chandigarh Optical Fibre Network (OFN) and said the company should adopt international practices to enter into the telecom services in a full-fledged manner. "PGCIL should think of entering into the telecom sector in a global manner and the funds generated from the new venture should be utilised to fund the transmission network in the country to set up a National Grid," Vajpayee said.

The world over, power companies are entering into the telecom sector and India should not be left far behind, he said adding that this would enable the consumers to get lowest tariffs and also efficient mode of services. Vajpayee said that India had totally liberalised the power and the telecom sectors and, therefore, the convergence between the two sectors should be utilised to the maximum to meet competition.
