What power do I attribute to money? Well, most of the people who have wielded power in the world were not necessarily rich. Examples are Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King and many more. Money is not everything, and yet, it is the only thing. Money buys a bed, but not necessarily sleep; it gets you a companion, but not a true friend; it buys food, but does not create an appetite; it buys medicine, but provides no guarantee of good health.Am I a spendthrift or a miser? Neither. As a matter of fact, I would describe myself as a philanthropist. The joy of giving to those who need it is far more satisfying than hoarding or spending on oneself only.I do not believe in showing off my wealth. I think it is egoistic. But dressing appropriately and not compromising on quality of life is what I believe in, and it shows in my character.
Do I like money? Of course. Money is noble, it is a virtue. Money is not bad by itself, the misuse of it is bad.I prefer neither the stock market nor real estate for investment. I just need to have enough to invest in a home of my own, some comfortable transport, and a reasonable bank balance to take care of uncertainties. The balance goes as an investment to deserving people, to whose life I could make a difference. I am not money-savvy in the real sense, but I have the capacity to attract money. I rely on my husband, of course, for financial advice. Since we share everything in life, he becomes 50 per cent owner of my money, and it, therefore, makes sense to consult him. He is also a shrewd businessman.
Like me! I would say my greatest extravagance has been travelling around the world. If someone left me a million dollars, I would sleep over it for three months! When the excitement got over, I would sit quietly with my advisor-my husband-and allot the money in different quantities to various causes that we believe in. The balance I would retain to travel more, to see the world. Is money evil? Anything can be evil if not appreciated and used wisely.
Yes, it can cause a lot of destruction to relationships if not handled intelligently. Money and wealth are god's gifts. Money, in the extreme desire to have it, can spoil your health and reputation, but if it is honestly earned and wisely used, as if you are a trustee of the wealth rather than the owner, it is not evil, but a blessing. Of course, if there were no money in this world, people would live by the barter system, like the olden days, and they would have been happier. I think the world would be a better place. Fewer crimes.
Finally, India's present economic situation can only improve if we control the population, improve 70 per cent of the quality of life of the rural people. At the same time, this haves and have-nots theory, in my opinion, is highly exaggerated. We should take the help of any outside source in matters like technology and education, to make us hi-tech, as long as our freedom is not jeopardised. Good ethics in business also pays ultimately because your collaborators will have more faith in you.
