Music World launches online music store

Arpan Mukherjee
Calcutta, August 4: Music World Entertainment Ltd on Friday extended its retail music stores to the virtual medium by launching www.musicworld4u.com, its first step towards e-commerce venture. The site was launched in Calcutta by vice-chairman Sanjiv Goenka.

The site developed by the Bangalore-based Planetasia.com, has a strong back-end with over 200,000 tracks, said Goenka, while inaugurating it. However, regional genres are to be activated by end of August. It has 35,000 pages on Indian and international genre, with artistes showcased exclusively. In fact, audio clips of around 30 seconds are available in some cases.

The site is developed on the Microsoft site server platform with a SQL database server. It has tied up with DHL as its logistics partner and the delivery is ensured within 48-hours of payment. As of now, there is one warehouse in Bangalore.

An official statement says that ultimately, stores will also double as warehouses.

On the success of Music World stores, Goenka noted that the current fiscal will close with a turnover of Rs 50 crore and with a monthly sales of one million cassettes and CDs. He pointed out that the Calcutta outlet has been "one of the highest selling stores" and the company is planning another store at the southern tip of the city in another eight weeks.
