Psion flags flotation of Symbian, not before mid-2001

AGENCE FRANCE PRESSE
London: Psion computer group flagged plans on Tuesday to float its Symbian joint venture with Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia and Matsushita, but said it would be unlikely before this time next year.

"We're not in the business of floating this company before its markets have been established," the company's Chief executive officer David Levin said in a conference call.

"We've given a pointer to the timing by saying that there are two conditions - one is the establishment of volume products, and the second is the market conditions to accept a float of this sort of importance." Levin said that shipments would begin by mid-2001, but conceded that "serious revenues" would not be be generated by Symbian before 2002.

The joint venture aims to create wireless access to the Internet via mobile phones. Psion said that its revenues had risen by 47 percent in the first half of 2000 to 94.3 million pounds (156.2 million euros, 141.8 million dollars).
