Global Trust Bank, Tata Cellular in tie-up to launch mobile banking

BV Mahalakshmi
Hyderabad: The Global Trust Bank Ltd (GTB) and Tata Cellular Limited, the cellular operator in Andhra Pradesh, have joined hands to kick off what is presumably the first wireless banking effort in the country. GTB announced on Tuesday the mobile banking facility to be launched soon, will be available on both SMS and WAP technologies, which means that the service will not be limited to the more expensive WAP handsets alone. The solution is based on software developed by IT major Infosys Technologies Limited which has had a longstanding relationship with GTB. GTB customers who subscribe to Tata Cellular will be able to check their balance, review the last five transactions, request for statements by fax, transfer of funds between accounts within the bank and make utility payments.

The customers will have access to their demat accounts which means stock trading for the first time goes mobile in the country. This gains importance considering the Sebi deadline to demat all scrips on Indian bourses by the end of the year. The interesting thing about the service will be the reminder facility for customers such as tipping them off on deposits maturing in next seven days, utility bills due for payment etc. without the customer having to dial a specified number.
