Institutional interest in Infosys helps Sensex gain 66 pts to close at 4476 pts

Mumbai, Aug 31: The aggressive buying by foreign funds (rumoured to be Janus Capital) mainly in Infosys and hectic short covering by operators on the last day of settlement both on BSE (preponed for holiday on September 1) and CSE, led to a smart recovery which resulted in the Sensex gaining 65 points at close.

The major contribution to today's recovery came from Infosys which was up 7 per cent. Strong buying interest was witnessed on this counter in early part of the day. The sentiment for other software stocks also improved drastically in the second half of the day as buying interest spread to other counters.

DSQ Software showed a smart rally in the last half-an-hour of trading, and hit the upper circuit at 8 per cent. SSI also gained more than 5 per cent. The upmove was accompanied by huge jump in volumes. The stock attracted an all-time high volume of 10 lakh shares. Sterlite also gained 5 per cent.

Global Telesystems was also up more than 3 per cent. Other stocks like Silverline, Satyam Computers, Zee Telefilms and HFCL also showed a positive close.

As for pivotals, ITC gained more than 2 per cent. The cement stocks-L&T, and ACC also attracted buying interest, and ended with gains. Other heavyweights like HLL, Reliance, and SBI remained steady.

The BSE Sensitive Index opened at 4407.07 points, touched a high of 4485.20 points, and closed at 4477.31 points. The low for the day was 4404.62 points. The S&P CNX Nifty also gained 20 points. The high for the day was 1397.30 points, and the low for the day was 1375.90 points.The number of advances stood at 793, and the number of declines was 620. Around 620 stocks remained unchanged. The trading volume on the BSE stood at Rs 5,070 crore.

Infosys was the highest traded scrip with a turnover of Rs 930.28 crore and the share closed at 8373.15, netting a gain of Rs 547.05 from yesterday's closing level of Rs 7,826.

Other top traded shares were Himachal Futuristic (Rs 588.36 crore), Zee Telefilms (Rs 459.59 crore), Satyam Computer (Rs 442.52 crore) and Global Tele (Rs 314.03 crore).

The stock which gained more than 7.9 per cent were Padmini Poly, DSQ Soft, ABB, EIH, RS Soft, Wartsila NSD, Cinevista, Vakrangee, Tata Info, Mobile Tele, Salora Int, Melstar Info, Parikh Plat, PCS, Wellwin Ind, Blue Dart, Jindal Photo, Mascon Global.

Other gainers for the day were Infosys, SSI, Raymond, Top Cassettes, Punjab Communication, Corporation Bank, Sonata Software, GV Films, Titan Ind, Visualsoft, Valiant, Mirc Electronics.At the same time, stocks which dipped more than 7.9 per cent were Apollo Hospitals, Monalisa Mul, Nexus Soft, Alps Info, Amex Info, Khyati Resort, Magan Ind, .
