Sugar output in current season put at 180 lakh tonne

New Delhi, Aug 31: Sugar production during July, the tenth month of the current sugarcane season (Oct-Sept 1999-00) was about 1.08 lakh tonne as against 1.19 lakh tonne during the same month last year, bringing the total output during 1999-00 to 179.99 lakh tonne compared to 153.30 lakh tonne during the corresponding period last season. Sugar despatches from factories during the month including 0.05 lakh tonne of imported sugar stood at 12.32 lakh tonne for internal consumption and was zero for exports compared to 12.11 lakh tonne in the same period last year, a joint statement by National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories and Indian Sugar Mills Association said on Thursday.

It said that the total offtake till July 2000 for internal consumption was 128.13 lakh tonne including 6.14 lakh tonne of imported sugar as against 124.55 lakh tonne including 8.38 lakh tonne of imported sugar in the same period last year. The offtake for exports till July this year was nil compared to an offtake of 0.22 lakh tonne during the corresponding period in last season, the release said.

The closing stock of sugar as on July 31, was 124.81 lakh tonne (including 0.15 lakh tonne of imported sugar) as against 90.85 lakh tonne which was inclusive of 2.25 lakh tonne of imported sugar on the same day last season, the release added.
