Mumbai, Aug 31: Consumer electronics company, Videocon, is planning to launch its much talked of Web enabled televisions (TV) in mid Sept after the company successfully completed trial runs of the product early this week. Company managing director VN Dhoot said, "The company expects to manufacture 10,000 TV sets in the first year of its launch and go upto 50,000 by the year end."
The Web enabled TVs will be costlier than the existing product line by Rs 5,000, Dhoot told The Financial Express. The current market prices for the Videocon range of televisions is Rs 12,000 to Rs 15,000. The Web enabled TVs is being manufactured through a technology tie-up with `Telecruz' of the US. The Web TVs is being manufactured at the newly integrated assembly lines created at Chitegaon and Bhalgoan near Aurangabad. The new plant is expected to produce 30 per cent, 60 per cent and 10 per cent of its CTVs in the 14 inch, 20 inch and 25 inch and above categories. Thirty per cent of the production at the new facility would be earmarked for exports while the rest would be for the domestic market.
Videocon's Web TV is consequent to the company's plans launch launch a nationwide dial-up Internet service with an initial investment of Rs 130 crore within a month. A wholly owned subsidiary of Videocon International is being floated to manage its ISP and Internet-related services.
The company is now building the infrastructure for its dial up Internet services, which will be offered in 85 cities. The company plans to use the VSNL gateway for their connectivity.
The Internet service may be bundled free of cost with the various Internet appliances and devices sold by the group. The reason: to boost sales of its products like the Vnet, set-top-boxes and web TV. Videocon wants to convert its huge customer base into potential Internet users.
The company currently has a customer base of one crore. Annually Videocon sells about 1.5 million CTV sets. Videocon claims to have a market share of 19 per cent, 11 per cent, 7 per sent and 2.5 per cent for its Videocon, Sansui, Akai and Toshiba CTV brands respectively. Television manufacturers are all incorporating the web enabled facility into their product line.
Close competitor, Philips India has already built the Web enabling technology into all the models starting from the 21-inch television set. The Web TVs will be costlier by Rs 4,000 in each of the product.
