Briefing

Karnataka to export 10,000 quintals of sugar
With the Centre permitting export, Karnataka is preparing grounds to export at least 10,000 quintals of sugar which has piled up in its factories, Minister for Sugar and Animal Husbandry, A Krishnappa, said on Wednesday.

Concrete decisions on exports and the countries to which it should be exported would be decided by October 15, he told reporters in Bangalore.

About Rs 1500 crore worth of sugar stocks was lying in the state factories, which owed arrears to farmers to the tune of Rs 750 crore, he said.

Krishnappa said though the Centre had declared that it had stopped sugar imports, no official notification had been issued so far to the effect. The minister said the state government would be deputing a team of offcials to New Delhi on September 15, to discuss problems of the sugar industry in the state. Krishnappa said the government had given permission to 25 sugar factories to go in for co-generation of power, for which Karnataka was the first state in the country to extend subsidy. Yarn prices dipPrices of selective waste yarns drifted on the Delhi cotton yarn market today due to poor offtake by carpet and duster manufacturers. Elsewhere, prices of other yarns remained stable onlittle doing. The volume of business remained restricted. Marketmen said demand from handlooms and powerlooms units remained negligible. In the waste yarn section Jyoti, Diamond and Deepak brands 2 count yarns quoted Re 1 each down at Rs 124, Rs 126 and Rs 124 per 4.54 kilo bundle respectively owing to sluggish demand from duster and carpet manufacturers. On the other hand, Govind 2 count yarn remained steady at Rs 110-122 per 4.54 kilo bundle on some enquiries. In the Hank yarn section Kathua 2/6 and Bhatinda 2/20 counts yarn were unchanged at Rs 226 and Rs 385 per 4.54 kilo bundle respectively on some deals.
