Optic-fibre backbones to help subscribers

New Delhi: Optical networking, Internet through wireless, multiple access, content distribution and streaming media, and Internet storage are five key factors driving the scorching pace of Internet development, Atul Bhatnagar said at a session on `Emerging Internet Infrastructure for ISPs and e-business'. He said advances in optic-fibre technologies - limited only by the speed of light - would help resolve the concern over whether the backbone could deliver adequate capacity. New optical backbones will make it possible to match the developments in computing over the last few decades.

On wireless, Bhatnagar cited a Yankee group report which predicted that the market for mobile data and information services would rise to $36 billion in 2003 from $2 billion in 1998 - a compound growth of 75 per cent. He also elaborated on how streaming media would be the next major application with the integration of voice, data and video. It will help the spread of education and entertainment widely According to Bhatnagar, Web farms are deploying intelligent switching, intelligent load balancing, personalised content, etc., to boost delivery and access speeds. He showed how the Internet of yesteryears were all about DNS servers, remote access servers and caches. Whereas today Internet-the next generation Internet consists of extremely intelligent switching, user-specific content, global load balancing, etc. Three key technologies to be appreciated by ISPs are, according to Bhatnagar site selection software, policy management software and content management software.
